বাংলা সাহিত্যের একজন প্রধান কবি ও প্রবন্ধকার হিসেবে পরিচিতি হলেও, বিশ্বদেব মুখোপাধ্যায়ের যাত্রার সূচনায় তাঁর প্রিয় বিচরণ ক্ষেত্র ছিল বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক গল্প। তাঁর লেখা বেশ কিছু বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক গল্প-উপন্যাস, রহস্য গল্প প্রভৃতি প্রকাশিতও হয়েছিল সে-সময়ের কিছু প্রখ্যাত পত্র-পত্রিকায়। কিন্তু তারপর তিনি বেশ কিছুকাল শুধুমাত্র কবিতা রচনায় এবং বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণায় মগ্ন থাকায়, সাময়িকভাবে এ-কাজে ভাটা পড়লেও, তাঁর লেখা বেশ কিছু গল্প ইতিমধ্যেই বহুল প্রশংসা লাভ করেছে। বিশ্বদেব মুখোপাধ্যায়ের ‘কল্পবিজ্ঞানসমগ্র’— তারই ফলশ্রুতি।
