মানুষ হয়ে জন্মানোর একটা ফান্ডামেন্টাল যাতনা আছে। এই যাতনার অনেক রূপ। তবে উৎস একটাই। সেটা হল মানুষের বুদ্ধিমত্তা। মানুষ তার মননে এমন এক ক্ষুধা নিয়ে অস্তিত্বে প্রবেশ করে যে, এখানে জীবনভর সমস্ত উপাদান গিলেও কখনোই সে-ক্ষুধা মেটে না। কারণ, রিয়ালিটির উদাসীন আচরণ আর দুর্বোধ্য রহস্যের মোড়ে মানুষকে প্রতিবারই এক চূড়ান্ত মূর্খতায় পর্যবসিত হতে হয়। আর এখানে যাতনার উৎপত্তিটা হয় তখনই, যখন আমরা বুঝতে পারি যে, একই সময়ে আমরা মূর্খ ও বুদ্ধিমান দুটোই। বুদ্ধিমত্তার প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য হল আত্ম দর্শন অথবা নিজের অস্তিত্ব নিয়ে রিভার্স ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং-এ লিপ্ত হওয়ার ক্ষমতা। আর এই কাজে— সবসময় সবাই না হলেও— মনুষ্যমন খুবই পারদর্শী। তবে এই কাজে কে কত গভীরে লিপ্ত হবে—কে কত গভীরে বিকল্পহীন যাতনায় ডুব দেবে সেটা ঠিক করার ফ্রি উইল কারও আছে কি না নিশ্চিতভাবে তা নির্ণয় করা সম্ভব নয়। এবং আত্ম-দর্শনের চর্চায় আমরা আমাদের সকল ভঙ্গুর অঙ্গগুলোকে একেবারে কেটে ফেলে দিতে পারব কিনা সে-নিশ্চয়তাও দেয়া সম্ভব নয়। যেটা নিশ্চিত সেটা হল মানুষের সামগ্রিক বুদ্ধিমত্তা— যদিও তার বণ্টনে কোনো সমতা নেই— এর গভীর তাড়নায় নিজেকে দেখা, অন্যকে দেখা ও জগৎকে দেখার এক আনন্দ মিশ্রিত যাতনায় কিংবা যাতনা মিশ্রিত আনন্দে মানুষকে মেতে উঠতে হয় মনঃদর্শন তথা নিউরো দর্শনে।
