উত্তর লেবাননের বিশারিতে ১৮৮৩ সালে জন্ম কাহলিল জিব্রানের। এবং ১৯৩১ সালে নিউ ইয়র্কে মৃত্যু হয় তাঁর। তাঁর প্রথম দিকের লেখা আরবি ভাষায়। লেখাগুলিকে আধুনিক আরবি সাহিত্যের সর্বাধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিঁড়ি মনে করা হয়। ১৯১৮ থেকে জিব্রান ইংরেজিতে লিখতে শুরু করেন এবং ১৯২০-১৯৩০ দশকের কাব্যভাষায় যে-বিপুল আলোড়ন এসেছিল তা মূলত তাঁর প্রভাবেই। এই সংকলনে জিব্রানের ‘দি প্রফেট’, ‘ল্যাজারাস অ্যান্ড হিজ বিলাভেড’ আর ‘দ্য আর্থ গড্স’ এই বইগুলোর সম্পূর্ণ অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে। আর ‘দি ম্যাডম্যান’, ‘দি স্যান্ড অ্যান্ড ফোম’, ‘দ্য ওয়ান্ডারার’, ‘দি ফোররানার’ বইয়ের নির্বাচিত অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে। সঙ্গে জিব্রানের কয়েকটি চিঠির অনুবাদও রাখা হয়েছে সেগুলোর অনুষঙ্গ-সহ। আশা করা যায় এই বই পাঠকদের কাছে জিব্রানের একটা সার্বিক চিত্র ফুটিয়ে তুলতে পারবে।
