গোর্খাল্যান্ড মুভমেন্টের সময় পুড়ে যাওয়া ল্যান্ডরোভারে করে দুই ভূত ঘুরে বেড়ায় প্রতি রাতে। কোনো দিন দার্জিলিঙের কাচারির উঠানে, কোনো দিন দিনহাটার কোনো আলুখেতে আড্ডা মারে তারা। আড্ডার জালে আটকে পড়ে কখনো ইস্ট পাকিস্তানের বাঙালি রিফিউজি দুলালের বাপ, কখনো দার্জিলিঙের নেপালি দর্জি ফুরলামুর বর, কিংবা স্কুলছুট রাজবংশী কিশোর মজুর সহদেব। দুলালের পাগল বাপ ফেলে আসা বগুরার হাট খুঁজতে গিয়ে পৌঁছে যায় দিনহাটার বাজারে। ফুরলামুর মাতাল বর তার সিপাহি ঠাকুরদার বীরত্বের গল্প করতে করতে সিআরপিএফ-এর জুতোর আওয়াজে ভয় পেয়ে প্যান্ট ভিজিয়ে ফেলে। সহদেব দুলালদের বাড়িতে সস্তায় মজুরি করার ফাঁকে গ্রেটার কোচবিহার পার্টির শিব চন্ডী পুজা কমিটির ক্যাশিয়ার হয়ে যায়। গল্পের ডালপালা ছড়ালে, এদের গল্পগুলো আর আলাদা থাকে না। বহু, বহু বছরের সমাজ, রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাসের খাতে নিজের মতো করে বইতে থাকে। দার্জিলিংয়ের বহুল প্রচলিত সামরিক আর ঔপনিবেশিক ইতিহাসের বাঁধাধরা বীরত্ব আর আনুগত্যের তলায় চাপা পড়া ভয়ের ইতিহাস জানা যায়। আবার ‘রাজার শহর’ কোচবিহারে বহু লালিত ক্ষত্রিয় গর্বের আড়ালে চাপা পড়া, হাজার বছরের হেরে যাওয়া পালিয়ে আসা মানুষদের স্বস্তিতে বসবাসের সুযোগ পাওয়ার ইতিহাস উঠে আসে। ভাটিয়া আর রাজবংশীদের পারস্পরিক সংঘাত, ভালোবাসা, হিংসা, নির্ভরতা, ঘেন্না উঠে আসে। আর পাশাপাশি এই দুই বয়ে চলার গল্পে প্রচ্ছন্ন হয়ে থাকে লেপচা, লিম্বু উপকথা, কোচবিহারের নিজস্ব মহাকাব্য গোসানীমঙ্গল। ভিন্ন সময়ের, ভিন্ন জায়গার, ভিন্নভাবে পিষে যাওয়া মানুষেরা পোড়া ল্যান্ডরোভারের সামনে এক হয়ে ওঠে তাদের অপরাধে— আফশোসে।
