১৯৩০-৩১ সময়পর্বে প্যারিসের শহরতলি ক্লিশিতে বসবাসকালের অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে মিলায় এই উপন্যাস লেখেন। তাঁর অন্য অনেক লেখার মতো এই উপন্যাসেও যৌনতা রয়েছে। শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাসের মতো স্বাভাবিকভাবেই রয়েছে। মিলার নিজেই বলেছেন, প্যারিসের আকাশে-বাতাসে যৌনতা ভেসে বেড়াচ্ছে। তরলের মতো। ফরাসি দেশে নারীর গুরুত্ব একজন মানুষের জীবনে বিরাট। সেখানে নারী শুধু বান্ধবী কিংবা স্ত্রী নন, তিনি ব্যক্তিত্বময়ী। অশ্লীলতাকে পরিচ্ছন্নতার আর-এক নাম বলতেন মিলার। তাঁর কাছে অশ্লীলতা ভাব প্রকাশের একটি ধরন। লেখার ক্ষেত্রে জোর করে অশ্লীলতার মুখ বন্ধ করে দেওয়া বা তাকে এড়িয়ে যাওয়া কিংবা উপেক্ষা করার মানুষ তিনি ছিলেন না। কারণ, যুদ্ধ, জরা, রোগ, খরা, এইসব মানবজাতিকে বার বার খাদে এনে ফেলেছে। অশ্লীলতা নয়। তাঁর উপন্যাস তাই জীবনের উদযাপন। যে-কোনো রোবট সমাজে এই উদযাপন আতঙ্কের বিষয়। কারণ, সৃষ্টিশীলতা ধরে রাখতে গেলে শিল্পী আর যা-ই হোক, রোবট হতে পারবে না।
