মনোরঞ্জন ব্যাপারীর গল্পগুলো দলিত শ্রমজীবী পীড়িত মানুষের বহুস্বর হয়ে ধরা দেয়। ভালো করে তাঁর আত্মজীবনী পাঠ করলে বোঝা যায় আত্মজীবনীর ‘আমি’-ই বারংবার নানারূপে ফিরে আসে গল্পগুলোয়। কিন্তু এই আমি একজন নয়। মনোরঞ্জন তাঁর এক আমি-র ভিতরে ধারণ করেন প্রান্তসমাজের আরও অনেক আমি-কে, যারা আমাদের আখ্যানবৃত্তের মূলস্রোতে, সংস্কৃতির— স্মৃতির— আত্মনির্মাণের— শিকর অনুসন্ধানের পথে ‘ওরা’ হয়েই থাকে। তাদের চোখে বিশ্বদর্শনের সম্ভাবনা অঙ্কুরেই বিনষ্ট হয় আমাদের জাতি ও শ্রেণি বিভক্ত সমাজে, অনেক সময় তারা দেখার বিষয় হয় মূলস্রোত সাহিত্যে, কিন্তু তাদের দেখাকে আমরা দেখতে পাই না। দলিত লেখকের দেখা সুতরাং কেবল দলিত শ্রমজীবী প্রান্তিক মানুষকে দেখা নয়, তাদের চোখ দিয়ে দেখা। ব্যাপারীর ছোটোগল্পগুলি এখানে এই ছোটোলোকের দেখার বিস্তার। মনোরঞ্জন আত্মজীবনীর বাইরে বেরিয়ে গল্পগুলোয় নিজেকে এই সমাজের প্রতিনিধি করে তোলেন না, অন্যের মুখ দিয়ে বলান তাদের গল্পগুলো।
