দূর-পূর্বের চলচ্চিত্র বলতে দীর্ঘদিন জাপান ছিল পৃথিবীর আগ্রহের কেন্দ্রে। পূর্বের অন্যান্য দেশে ইতিউতি কিছু ভালো ছবি হয়নি যে তা নয়। কিন্তু তরঙ্গ বলতে আমরা যা বুঝি জাপানের ‘নুবেরু বাগু’ই সেই অর্থে দূর-পূর্বের একমাত্র তরঙ্গ ছিল। বিষয়ের বিচারে সাহসী ও বিষয় অনুযায়ী প্রকাশভঙ্গির অননুকরণীয় মৌলিকতা, দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার কিম কি-দুক-কে নিয়ে আসে পাদপ্রদীপের আলোয়। একটি তরঙ্গের মধ্যে বিভিন্ন ধারার বিষয়-নির্মাণশৈলীকে পরিচালক-ভেদে এক-একভাবে প্রস্ফুটিত হতে দেখা যায়। কিন্তু একজন পরিচালক ছবির পর ছবিতে বিষয় ও নির্মাণশৈলীর মৌলিক বহিঃপ্রকাশ ঘটিয়ে চলেছেন এ-ঘটনা বিরল। এই হিসেবে কিম একাই একটি তরঙ্গ। লাতভিয়ায় কিমের অকাল-মৃত্যু তাই আসলে একটি তরঙ্গেরই অকাল-মৃত্যু। কিম কি-দুক নিয়ে মানুষের আগ্রহের শেষ নেই। তাঁর চলচ্চিত্র নিয়ে দুই বাংলা শুরু থেকেই আবেগে কম্পমান। এই আবেগের শরিক আমরাও। কিমের প্রতিভাকে দুই মলাটের মধ্যে ধরার তাই এই দুঃসাহসিক প্রচেষ্টা।

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
