‘মশালচী’– বিভূতিভূষণের লেখায় শাক-সবজি, খাওয়া-দাওয়া, বনলতার সারাংশ। বইটি ঠিক গবেষণাগ্রন্থ নয়। উপন্যাসের আকারে লেখক তাঁর লেখার নির্যাসটুকু তুলে ধরেছেন নিজস্ব মুন্সিয়ানায়। লেখকের কথায়— “প্রথমে ঠিক করেছিলাম থিয়োরি মেনে লিখব, গবেষণাপত্র যেমন হয়। তাতে মনে হল, নির্দিষ্ট কিছু পথ, নির্দিষ্ট নিয়ম মেনে চলতে হবে; বুনো, অনামি গাছগাছালি, পাখপাখালির বিচরণ সেখানে ক্ষুণ্ণ হবে, মহাজন ধাওতাল সাহুর সরল জীবন ব্যাহত হবে, আদিবাসী তরুণীর সৌন্দর্য লঘু হবে, বৃথা হবে তাঁদের মাথা পিয়ালফুল কি রাঙা ধাতুপফুল গুঁজে মেলা ঘুরতে আসা। নালসে পিঁপড়ের ডিম হবে না মানুষের সুখাদ্য— প্রকৃতি ও মানুষের মাঝে পাঁচিল পড়ে যাবে থিয়োরির ভাবগম্ভীরতায়। তখনই মনে হল উপন্যাসে আকার দিলে সকল বিষয়বস্তুতে কেমন সরলরেখায় গেঁথে ফেলা যাবে।” এই উপন্যাস বাংলা সাহিত্যে এক নতুন ধারা। পাঠক শুধু যে উপন্যাসের স্বাদটুকু নেবে তা নয়, এই উপন্যাস বিভূতিভূষণকে ভাবতে ও ভালোবাসতে শেখাবে।
