‘হাথক দরপণ’ নামের অত্যাশ্চর্য এই বইটির… মিতায়তনে গড়া কথাকল্প, যা পরম আস্বাদ্য ও আগাগোড়া জাদুকাহিনির মোহঘেরা।… তাঁর রচনায় কোনও কষ্টকল্পিত অতিশয়োক্তি বা অকারণ ভাবোচ্ছ্বাস নেই।… রামচন্দ্র প্রামাণিক আসলে ধরতে চেয়েছেন এক অধুনালুপ্ত যাপনপর্বের সমাজ-ইতিহাস।… সারা বইটিতে ঝকমক করছে এক দ্রষ্টা কবিচিত্ত যা গ্রামাশ্রয়ী অথচ যাতে রয়েছে নাগরিক পরিশীলিত মননের মাধুরী।

স্মৃতিকথন তথা আত্মজীবনীর যে শৈলীর সঙ্গে আমরা ঘনিষ্ঠ, “হাথক দরপণ” ঠিক সেরকম নয়। এই লেখায় ‘আমি’ থেকেও নেই।… লেখকের গ্রাম এখানে মধ্যমণি। কথাসাহিত্যের মায়াময় গদ্যশৈলী এবং উপস্থাপনা ওই ইতিহাস চর্চাকে প্রাণবান করেছে। রামচন্দ্রের উপস্থাপনা যেন কথা বলে।
